Gauteng Health probes 'shocking conditions' at Mamelodi hospital
This comes after the Public Protector made a surprise visit & found that some patients sleep on benches.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department says it has launched its own investigation after the Public Protector found that patients have to sleep on benches, and up to 15 newborn babies die every month at the Mamelodi Hospital.
Thuli Madonsela made a surprise visit to the facility earlier this week, where she found that the 400-bed hospital is struggling with severe staff shortages, with at least one qualified nurse resigning each month.
The department's Steve Mabona says they will have a meeting with hospital management soon.
"We are saying that as a department we will work with the hospital management to come up with a strategy on how to resolve all the challenges that they are facing at the facility."
