At the University of London, the School of Oriental and African Studies also voiced their support, while independent students from countries such as Germany, China and Cameroon have also taken to social media.

Amnesty International says it's alarmed by the police's actions and has called on them to comply with international standards governing the use of force.

The Amandla Movement has also called on students around the world to rally behind the South African students and their demand for free education.

  • EWN Reporter (@ewnreporter) October 22, 2015 A small group of students have started demonstrating here at UJ's Kingsway campus saying they want to close the university today in solidarity with other tertiary institutions across the country.

This protest coincides with UJ's SRC elections, but the students say it's time that they too take a stand against fee increases.
