CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has been labeled an opportunist by some University of Cape Town (UCT) #FeesMustFall leaders.

Maimane gatecrashed a student protest yesterday and received a frosty reception.

Things didn't go well as he was trying to gain entry to address the protesting students.

Student leader Lwazi Somya, believes Maimane was just politicking.

"The DA has never supported the campaign of #FeesMustFall."

Probably the greatest moment of my life. Comrades of RMF telling Mmusi Maimaine and his campaign team to fuck off. 󾌴󾌺󾌴󾌺󾌴He showed up at the police station with plans to co opt the hype and join the march to speak. Political opportunism. "Hey guys look, it's Mmusi Maimaine sent by Hellen Zero... What are you doing here??"

Maimane has blamed Sasco for the hostile reception, saying the organisation is defending the ANC's failures but Somya disputes this.

"Most of the students who were there are not even members of Sasco.

Meanwhile, Sasco says it wants a nationwide university shutdown today by midday today calling for students to protest peacefully at institutions.

The University of Pretoria and Rhodes University has confirmed that all university activities will be suspended today while Wits has suspended lectures for the rest of this week.

The #FeesMustFall Campaign has been taken up at several universities around the country as far as the University of the Free State and Sasco says all institutions across the country must join the call to protest.

The Namibian National Students Organisation also condemns the arrest of University of Cape Town students by police.
