City of JHB prioritising probe into M1 bridge collapse
Two people were killed & 10 remain hospitalised after the pedestrian bridge collapsed last week.
JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says it has prioritised its probe into a deadly scaffolding collapse in Sandton.
Last week, two motorists were killed when the structure, along a pedestrian bridge on the M1 Highway at the Grayston Bridge, collapsed.
WATCH: A bystander filmed the scene where the scaffolding of a bridge being built parallel to Grayston Drive over the M1 highway, near Sandton, collapsed.
The bridge was intended to be a walkway between Alexandra and Sandton.
Officials reopened the highway last week after it was closed in both directions as construction workers cleared the rubble.
Five separate investigations into the incident are currently underway.
The City's Nthatisi Modingoane says, "We don't want this matter to drag on. The project itself is a very critical project in the city's programme. If we delay this process, it might hamper the delivery of the actual product."
The structure belongs to construction company Murray & Roberts.
The company has said those who were affected in the collapse will be compensated.
