3 dead, hundreds left destitute after weekend shack fires
The City of Cape Town's fire rescue service repsonded to fires in Strand, Khayelitsha and Masiphumelele.
CAPE TOWN - At least three people have died in various shack fires across the peninsula over the past weekend.
In the most recent tragedy, a man and a child were killed in a blaze in Khayelitsha.
Hundreds of people have also been left destitute following shack fires in Strand and Masiphumelele.
The City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services' Liesl Moodie said they had responded to an incident in Philippi as well.
"We responded to fires at a formal dwelling as well as three wooden structures."
In Masiphumelele, residents are trying to rebuild their lives about 70 homes were gutted during a blaze on Saturday.
Around 300 people have been left destitute, but no deaths or injuries have been reported.
The City Of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management's Charlotte Powell said several organisations have stepped in to assist the families.
