JOHANNESBURG - Glenton Mashinini has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Mashinini was deputy IEC chief electoral officer between 1998 and 2001.

He was appointed as a commissioner of the electoral commission in April this year.

The electoral body has been without a chairperson since last year when Pansy Tlakula resigned over a botched leasing deal.

Last year, the IEC's deputy chairperson Terry Tselane said he was focusing on his current role.

Tselane was asked directly if he was available for the post of chair.

"I'm comfortable with the position I hold and at the moment, the focus is to ensure the 2016 elections are free and fair."

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found Tlakula guilty of misconduct for giving a headquarters leasing deal to her business partner in 2013.

Tlakula stepped down after the Electoral Court said Parliament should recommend she be removed.
