JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) says it's now investigating whether a Johannesburg policeman, arrested for allegedly raping his colleague's 13 year old daughter, has been involved in other crimes.

The warrant officer stationed in Mondeor was arrested on Tuesday night.

Ipid says the officer was drunk when he was arrested, and his statement will be taken later.

Ipid's Grace Langa says witnesses who have been interviewed say the suspect's estranged wife has reported her husband for domestic violence, but withdrew the charges on each occasion.

"There are no formal charges. But the cases will be drawn from the past. When we investigate, we'll also need to look at the history. The wife has to be interviewed as well."

She says the officer was staying with his daughter, who will now also be interviewed.

Langa says the officer, who is being detained at the Vosloorus Police Station, is still too drunk to give a statement.

The 13-year-old girl was sent by her mother to the suspect's house to give him a shirt, at which point he allegedly raped her.

Langa says, "Apparently this officer's wife left due to domestic issues. He raped the daughter of his neighbor, friend and colleague."

Langa says the officer was supposed to report for duty this morning.

Police investigators are expected to be sent to the crime scene today to collect more evidence.
