CAPE TOWN - Police have increased visibility in a Port Elizabeth suburb after community attacks on officers during the arrest of alleged gangsters.
Police say members were attacked on at least two occasions after responding to gang-related shootings in Gelvandale.
The South African Police Service (Saps) says chaos ensued when officers apprehended an alleged gang boss and another suspected gangster.
Additional manpower has been deployed to the area, after police came under attack from the community.
Police spokesperson Alwin Labans says at least two officers were injured during the violence over the weekend.
It followed the arrest of two suspected gang members.
Labans says some members of the community demanded the gangsters be released and pelted police with rocks and beer bottles.
The police station and at least four police vehicles were also damaged.
