JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) wants the idea of a wealth tax being imposed on the rich to be seriously considered.

The issue came up for debate at the party's National General Council held in Gauteng at the weekend.

ANC economic commission chair Enoch Godongwana said they crafted this resolution very carefully.

"Consideration must be given to this aspect and we need to explore its visibility and political ability. And, if possible, how do you do this?"

The party also looked at the power crisis.

"The issues we're talking about are efficient maintenance, increasing capacity and the refurbishing of power stations."

He said the key issue was still the number of young people without jobs.
