CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department has thrown its weight behind a campaign to collect a million sanitary towels for poor girls in the province.

To celebrate international Girl Child Day, MEC Albert Fritz joined the Dischem Caring For Girls campaign by donating sanitary towels and other personal hygiene products.

He says his department has been inundated with calls about girls missing school because they cannot afford sanitary towels.

Fritz says the donations will go to girls at schools across the province.

"We're urging people just to buy one bag, I think it's from R23, R24, and throw into the basket for our collection."
