Andile Jali's strike sees Bafana beat Costa Rica

Jali’s early strike was enough to secure a win against a team placed 31st in the Fifa World rankings.

JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana put up one of their most disciplined and clinical performances under coach Shakes Mashaba to defeat Costa Rica 1-0 in an international friendly at the National Stadium in San Jose on Friday morning.

Andile Jali's early strike was enough to secure a win against a team placed 31st in the Fifa World rankings.

Itumeleng Khune handed Costa Rica a scoring opportunity in the third minute with a poor piece of distribution, but he quickly redeemed himself by saving the shot from from Joel Campbell.

In the absence of major strikes, Sibusiso Vilakazi played as the visitors' spearhead in attack. He is not a natural centre-forward, but he exterted much needed pressure to the hosts and was supported by Mandla Masango, George Lebese and Jali.

South Africa will complete their Central American tour with a match against Honduras on 14 October.
