NPA considers charging DA member for illegally selling property
The DA member is said to have swindled a number of people out of more than R100,000.
CAPE TOWN - The National Prosecuting Authority is considering whether it will charge a George councillor accused of selling plots for RDP houses.
The Democratic Alliance member, who cannot be named until he is formally charged and appears in court, is alleged to have conned people in Pacaltsdorp into believing they could buy the properties without going through municipal channels.
He's said to have swindled a number of people, including an elderly couple and a police officer out of more than R100,000.
The police's Malcolm Pojie said, "The suspect apparently sold the property unlawfully. The case is being investigated and is with the public prosecutor."
In the meantime, councillor and leader of the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners Virgil Gericke claims the scam is still continuing.
"Last week he swindled an elderly couple out of R130,000 and they paid the amount in his office."
