South Africa took a 14-0 lead into half-time in their final Pool B clash against the USA.
JOHANNESBURG - South Africa take a 14-0 lead into half-time, in their final Pool B clash against the USA.
Centre Damian de Allende gave the Springboks the lead in the 8th minute after Fourie du Preez took a quick tap penalty in the Americans 22m area.
The ball made its way to De Allende very scrappily, which he scooped up off the turf before crossing over for his first test try.
The Boks continued to attack the Eagles goal line, spending the majority of the first half camped in the opposition territory.
Eben Etzebeth came close to scoring, losing the ball backwards over the goalline, while Jesse Kriel crossed over, only for the ball to be held up by the USA's South African born scrumhalf Nico Kruger.
Referee Pascal Gauzere duly awarded South Africa a penalty try in the 26th minute, after a dominant Springbok scrum forced the American pack to commit identical errors at scrum time.
After conceding two penalties for collapsing the scrum in front of their try line, the referee had little choice but to award the Boks the penalty try.
