PTA cyclist knocked off bike, dragged in 'racist attack'
Simba Masvino was knocked off his bicycle & dragged along the road at the entrance of Nkwe Pleasure Resort.
PRETORIA - Pretoria police are questioning a group of men after a 38-year-old man was knocked off his bicycle, in what some eyewitnesses are suggesting was a racial attack.
Cyclist Simba Masvino was dragged along the road at the entrance of Nkwe Pleasure Resort on Sunday, allegedly attacked by a group of white men in a passing car.
He has since been discharged from hospital after being treated for internal bleeding and head injuries.
Masvino works on a plot close to the resort and was cycling home when the incident happened.
This witness, who wants to remain anonymous, says he saw a passenger in the back of the vehicle grabbing Masvino.
"I don't think they pushed him, it looked more like they held onto him and the pulled him along for a little bit and let go of him when he had lost his balance."
Masvino's employer Rudi Britz says he will make sure the perpetrators are brought to book.
"If you want to be stupid, you have to face up to that. I have to explain to him that this was an isolated case. He's been working so long for me and has been very supportive and now I must do the same for him."
Police are investigating claims that the incident was racially motivated and they are expected to take statements from witnesses.
Masvino is now in the care of family.
Witnesses believe Masvino was deliberately dragged along a vehicle, in what they believe was a racially motivated attack.
Masvino's employer shares the same suspicions.
"To me it's drunk guys coming out of the resort and thinking 'let's have fun with this guy cycling' and then pulling him off. It's a racial thing."
The police's Lungelo Dlamini says they are questioning both the witnesses and suspects to establish whether there was intent or if this was an accident.
Masvino was discharged from hospital with several stitches and a severely swollen face.
He is now in the care of his family.
