Officials who helped 12 Limpopo prisoners escape face harsh action
A manhunt has been launched for the suspects who broke out of the Tubatse and Mecklenburg cells.
JOHANNESBURG - Limpopo police say strict action will be taken against officials found to have assisted 12 awaiting trial prisoners escape from jail.
A manhunt has been launched for the suspects who broke out from the Tubatse and Mecklenburg police station cells at the weekend.
In both cases, the men reportedly sawed through mesh rooves.
The police's Ronel Otto says investigations are underway to determine if any officials were involved.
"If our members have been found either lacking in their duties, involved in the escape or not following the proper procedures for the detention of suspects, we will definitely take harsh disciplinary steps."
The men were arrested for a range of crimes including car theft, malicious damage to property and indecent assault.
