CAPE TOWN - The AbaThembu royal family has halted talks about a possible successor to King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo pending his Constitutional Court appeal.

Dalindyebo was sentenced to 12 years in prison last week by the Supreme Court of Appeal for a host of crimes committed in the mid-1990s.

The convictions relate to when he ordered the assault of several of his subjects and the torching of their homes.

He had approached the court to have his convictions set aside.

The court overturned his culpable homicide conviction and reduced his sentence from 15 to 12 years in prison, but it upheld his conviction for a string of other offences, including arson.
