JOHANNESBURG - Radovan Krejcir's mother is believed to be behind the Czech's foiled attempt to escape from prison.

The Sunday Independent says R246 million was set aside for his escape including for landing rights for him to flee the country.

This included Serbian hit men and a helicopter.

Krejcir, who has been convicted of drug dealing, kidnapping and attempted murder, planned a dramatic escape from prison involving helicopters and luxury cars.

During a raid, a 9mm pistol, four cellphones and other items were found hidden in his cell, as well as a hand written diary which may help police crack other cases.

The Sunday Times is reporting that a string of text messages and affidavits from Krejcir's former associates have been handed to police and correctional services, which are investigating his attempted jail escape.

His mother, Nadezda Krejcirova, has been identified by the former associates to be at the centre of his attempts to escape.

However the authorities were tipped off and his prison cell raided.

They found cellphones, weapons and a tazer gun. A number of prison warders are now facing arrest.
