Visa regulations: Thousands of jobs on the line
The tourism industry is warning that thousands of jobs are the line due to SA’s new visa regulations.
JOHANNESBURG - The Tourism Business Council of South Africa says the country has already suffered devastating losses due to the controversial visa regulations and is warning that thousands of jobs are the line.
The organisation says it has case studies from businesses that prove the new laws requiring children to carry unabridged birth certificates have affected the industry over the last four months.
It's also disappointed in the manner in which Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has handled the matter.
The Tourism Business Council has called on government to create ' industry-friendly' regulations.
The council's David Frost these regulations don't make South Africa attractive to the rest of the world.
"We urge the deputy president to scrap these regulations before any more damage is done."
A sentiment shared by other business owners.
One man says, "A lot of jobs are going to be lost and a lot of people are going to be without food."
While a woman says, "Please government, help us help you."
The tourism industry says if the regulations are not scrapped they will have a devastating impact on the economy.
