SAPS sets aside almost R1bn for promotions

JOHANNESBURG - National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has announced that nearly R1 billion has been set aside for promotions over the next two years.

She's confirmed this afternoon that over 14,000 constables will be promoted over that period, while more than 80,000 other staff members will receive salary hikes.

The announcement comes a day after the release of the annual crime statistics which showed that police are struggling in the fight against crime.

Phiyega says R300 million has been set aside to promote 14,000 constables and sergeants.

She says, "The criteria being that these personnel should have been in their current ranks for 11 years and more."

She says some employees will also receive raises.

"Another 87,514 employees will receive pay progression. The South African Police Service has set aside R580 million for this financial year."

The police commissioner says these moves are in recognition of the hard work by committed police members.
