CAPE TOWN - Four penalties by flyhalf Handre Pollard and a try from JP Petersen sees the Springboks lead 17-6 at halftime, in their Pool B clash against Samoa at the Rugby World Cup.

As expected, it's been a highly physical encounter, with both teams ferociously competing for ball at the breakdown.

In fact the Springboks won the first penalty of the game in the opening minute and Samoa was penalised for holding on.

Pollard making no mistake, giving the Boks an early 3-0 lead after just 2 minutes.

The Bulls pivot's opposite number, Michael Stanley slotted two penalties to give the Pacific islanders the lead for the first time in the game.

The Boks hit back almost immediately with winger JP Petersen broking up a Samoan backline move as he intercepted the Samoan half to race 70 metres up the field to score and give South Africa an 11-6 lead after 20 minutes.

Pollard failed to add the extras from the conversion, his only missed kick at goal in the first half.

It's been a first half in which the Boks showed their quality on attack, with captain Jean de Villiers also denied a try and Willie le Roux stepping on the touchline before making the final pass.

Pollard added two more penalties later in the half which sees the Boks lead Samoa 17-6 at the break.
