JOHANNESBURG - Three US activists who started a pro-abortion campaign say they are tired of being silenced by their critics.

The hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion started as a reaction to a proposed Republican bill that would defund Planned Parenthood which receives $500 million annually from the US government.

Lindy West, Amelia Bonow and Kimberly Morrison told online publication Vice that they began the campaign in a bid to encourage women to reclaim the conversation about abortion.

Many women have since used the hashtag to share their experiences, after Bonow spoke publicly about her terminations on Facebook.

Bonow told Vice that she will never regret her choice.

"The conversation around abortion has been completely hijacked by men and anti-choice activists who have made this not about women. Women reclaiming this digital space and erasing stigma is the biggest challenge those kinds of people face. They're scared, and they should be."

The campaign has now spiraled into a social media storm, with mixed reaction to the initiative, with many saying it's tantamount to murder.

"My body, my choice!"

If you think this is your body, then you need a psych evaluation
