CAPE TOWN - A 91-year-old German woman has been charged with 260,000 counts of being an accessory to murder, over allegations she worked in the Auschwitz death camp complex.

German prosecutors say the woman, who cannot be named because of legal reasons, was allegedly a member of the Nazi SS and worked as a radio operator for the camp commandant for several months in 1944.

They say she can be charged as an accessory to murder, because of her role at the camp.

Earlier this year, a 94-year-old man, known as the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz", was jailed under similar circumstances.
