'Rhodes statue vandals tried to remove its head'
The Cecil John Rhodes statue was damaged when it was vandalised on Friday at the Rhodes Memorial.
CAPE TOWN - SANParks says the perpetrators behind the vandalism of the Rhodes Statue tried to remove its head too.
The Cecil John Rhodes statue was damaged when it was vandalised on Friday morning at the Rhodes Memorial.
"They cut off the nose of the statue, I suspect they used a grinder to do that. They also attempted to cut the head of the statue but they didn't succeed. So as we speak the statute is damaged and it's without a nose."
Student lead decolonisation movement Rhodes Must Fall's Brian Kamanzi weighed in on the incident.
"To the best of my knowledge from the context of the movement, we're not aware of who is it that took action against the statue at the Rhodes Memorial, so called "Heritage site". We do believe that the chickens have come home to roost."
Police are investigating a case of vandalism.
