Motsoaledi: NHI papers ready for Cabinet
The white paper on the National Health Insurance scheme is ready to be presented to government.
CAPE TOWN - Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the white paper on the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme is ready to be presented to Cabinet.
Motsoaledi addressed the Hospital Association of South Africa in Cape Town earlier today.
He spoke about how the South African health system will be overhauled and what health reforms will be implemented over the next few years.
The highly anticipated NHI white paper details plans about the provision of universal healthcare to all South Africans by 2030.
"Universal health coverage; that every citizen must have access to good affordable health care services, regardless of their socio-economic conditions."
Motsoaledi says while some sectors remain sceptical about NHI, he is adamant it's the only way to provide equitable healthcare to rich and poor.
He adds it does not make economic or political sense not to provide universal health cover to all citizens.
The minister is heading to New York this week where he will present South Africa's NHI to the United Nations General Assembly.
