PRETORIA - Hawks management has dismissed reports that it operates a so-called rogue unit that was responsible for the arrest and alleged torture of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) nationals several years ago.

While the Sunday Independent claims to have exposed this unit, Eyewitness News understands it is in fact the Tactical Operations Management Section or Toms.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says the allegations in the weekend report are baseless, and challenged the newspaper to produce the evidence and not plant such perceptions in the public.

Mulaudzi says the arrest of the DRC nationals was an undercover operation involving crime intelligence, the Hawks and other units.

The report further claims that the rogue unit was also responsible for the arrest and rendition of Zimbabwean suspects in 2010, however EWN understands that unit was Toms.

Toms is made up of specific crime combating experts from the Hawks, but also includes members of the Crime Intelligence Unit and the Tactical Response Team.
