CAPE TOWN - As the build up continues to the Springboks opening game of the Rugby World Cup, former wing Ashwin Willemse says he's surprised at the team coach Heyneke Meyer has selected.

South Africa plays Japan tomorrow in Brighton while the tournament kicks off tonight with England taking on Fiji in the opener.

Jean de Villiers captains the side despite recently returning from injury. Willemse says that combination in midfield has surprised him.

"Jean is our captain, I was never surprised that he will be in our squad. The thing that surprises me is the exclusion of one of our best performing players who outdid this year's international season building up to the World Cup, Damian de Allende." (sic)
