JOHANNESBURG - The girlfriend of slain rapper Nkululeko "Flabba" Habedi says she did not mean to kill him but just wanted to hurt him as he was becoming increasingly aggressive.

Sindisiwe Manqele is on trial in the High Court sitting in Randburg accused of intentionally killing Habedi at his home in Alexandra in March.

Although she has admitted to stabbing him, Manqele says she was protecting herself.

Manqele says she stabbed Habedi, so that she could free herself from his firm grip.

She says Habedi had a knife in his hand when he barged into his bedroom and was pacing around hurling insults at her.

Manqele alleges the rapper had her in a choke hold and then violently pushed and pinned her against it, threatening her with the knife and accusing her of having an affair.

Proceedings had to shortly adjourn twice after the murder accused broke down as she described her version of events.

As she gave testimony Habedi's friends and family members coughed and made other gestures indicating their unappreciation of how she was portraying him.

Today marks a third day of her evidence in chief.
