Ipid probes cop shooting in Strand

CAPE TOWN - Police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) a says it's launched an investigation after a Cape Town police officer allegedly shot and wounded his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
The 41-year-old Warrant Officer Nevell Du Toit died on the scene while his girlfriend remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The shooting was reported at the woman's home in Strand shortly after 5am yesterday morning.
Ipid's Grace Langa says yesterday's shooting is under investigation.
"The department has received the allegation. Indeed we're investigating a case of murder and have opened an inquest.
Messages of support and condolences have been streaming in on Du Toit's Facebook page as family and friends seemingly struggle to digest the bad news.

Some described him as a good friend and dedicated officer.
Meanwhile, his girlfriend remains in a critical condition at a Somerset West hospital.
The motive for the shooting is still unclear.
