JOHANNESBURG - Newly sworn in Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says his style of leadership will be characterised by consultation and negotiation within the Liberal Party, but he says his government will not be changing any of its policies on climate change.

Turnbull unseated Tony Abbott in a leadership election in the Australian Parliament on Monday.

He won by 54 votes to 44.

Abbott had led Australia's Coalition government for two years and was viewed as a divisive figure within the party.

Turnbull has promised to bring in a new style of leadership.

"A culture of engagement, of consultation, of collaboration is so absolutely critical. That is how Cabinet governments and Parliamentary systems are meant to operate. The policy on climate change is one that I supported as a minister in the Abbott government, and it's one that I support today."
