CT cop allegedly shoots girlfriend before killing himself
The officer died on the scene while the woman has been rushed to a nearby hospital.
CAPE TOWN - A police officer has allegedly shot himself and his girlfriend at her Strand home.
It's believed the incident happened after 5am this morning.
The officer died on the scene while the woman is in a critical condition at a Somerset West hospital.
His girlfriend's home has been cordoned off with police tape following this morning's incident.
Neighbours, who don't want to be named, say they heard gunshots ring out at about 5:30am followed by a woman's scream. They say they're traumatised by the shooting.
Resident André Phillips has described the incident as "shocking".
"It is very shocking for us as residents; not only in our area but [if it were to happen] in any other area. For me, when I heard it, it was shocking."
Neighbours say the policeman's body was found on the ground in front of the car.
Police and other officials are currently combing through the crime scene.
A Chevrolet Spark can be seen parked in the driveway with blood splattered on the side and back.
Meanwhile, a VIP protection officer stationed at the Union Buildings allegedly shot and killed his wife and daughter at their home in Pretoria West on Saturday.
The couple's 17-year-old son and nephew witnessed the murder and will be handing in statements to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
The officer appeared in court this morning and the matter has been postponed to next week for an official bail application.
