CAPE TOWN - The National Police Commissioner says 'Operation Stopper', launched in Nyanga , will give policing in the area a much-needed boost.

Riah Phiyega addressed the media about the new crime-fighting operation this afternoon.

She says the operation will increase policing in the Nyanga area, which is desperately needed.

"For the past couple of years, the Nyanga precinct has earned the status of being the 'murder capital' of the country."

Phiyega says the initiative will focus on Brown's Farm and Samora Machel, as these are the two 'hotspot crime areas'.

The Commissioner adds Nyanga, which consists of 18 informal settlements and 20 formal settlements, is overpopulated and this often makes policing difficult.

Since the launch of the operation, 14 arrests have already been made.
