JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's Human Settlements Department will begin public engagements in Alexandra as it maps out its turnaround strategy for the township.

The department is holding a two-day summit in the northern Johannesburg township, that it wants to transform into an economically viable settlement.

Authorities say they are working towards developing a master plan that will also see the eradication of slum conditions.

Today church leaders, property owners and non-governmental organisations held discussions with MEC Jacob Mamabolo on past urban renewal attempts.

Mamabolo says he hopes a clear plan will be in place by the end of the summit.

"What we are looking for as an objective is a clear process of adopting the development plan for Alexandra. We want to have a plan that's modelled alongside the National Development Plan."
