'Transformation should not be hijacked by political thugs'
Jonathan Jansen says violence associated with the transformation debate has delegitimised its importance.
CAPE TOWN - University of the Free State Vice Chancellor Jonathan Jansen said it's important to discuss transformation at the country's tertiary institutions, but the debate should not be hijacked by what he calls political thugs.
Jansen said the violence associated with the transformation debate at some institutions has delegitimised its importance.
He said the debate should not be abandoned simply because students can't control their tempers.
"What you're finding also is these thugs really, who ride that spirit of transformation, with the drive for transformation and behave as thugs and unfortunately they think that's absolutely correct. You've got to make sure that does not happen. You've got to shift rules and the guidelines."
