Panel of psychiatrists to assess Camps Bay murder accused

CAPE TOWN - A panel of psychiatric experts will be tasked with examining the mental state of a Guatemalan national who's accused of murdering his American girlfriend while on holiday in Cape Town.

Diego Novella was on Monday ordered to undergo a 30 day observation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.

He was arrested in July after the body of Gabriela Kabrins Alban was found at in a Camps Bay Hotel.

Novella will remain in custody at the hospital section of Pollsmoor Prison until he's admitted.

His lawyer William Booth said, "We have engaged a psychiatrist who will also be on the panel and at the end of that 30 day period we will have to have certain reports detailing his mental state at the time of the incident and presently."

The case continues on the 30 September.
