JOHANNESBURG - Two people have been severely burnt while doing maintenance on a transformer at the Monash University in Roodepoort overnight.

Paramedics say one of the men was airlifted to hospital with 50 percent burns while the other was treated on the scene with less severe burns.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha says it's still unclear what caused the transformer to explode.

"When we arrived we found that two men had sustained severe burns. Exactly what caused the explosion of the transformer is still unknown."
