No Maria Sharapova in the US Open
Sharapova has been out of action since Wimbledon because of a knee injury.
JOHANNESBURG - Five-time grand slam champions Maria Sharapova will not be taking part in this year's final grand slam, the US Open, because of a knee injury she's been struggling with.
Sharapova has been out of action since Wimbledon, trying to recover in time to feature at Flushing Meadows, but as confirmed by the Russian on social media, there was not enough time for her to get back to full fitness.
The 28-year-old, who last won this tournament in 2006 at the tender age of 19, has had an unfortunate several months, battling illness at the French Open and heading into Wimbledon having not sufficiently prepared enough.
Sharapova was due to face world number 37 Daria Gavrilova on the first day but her place will now be taken by Russian Daria Kasatkina, who makes her way in as a qualifying lucky loser.
