CAPE TOWN - Eight years after construction began, Cabinet says it now expects all six units of the Medupi power plant to be operational in the first half of 2019.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe was due to give a briefing this morning on the outcome of the latest Cabinet meeting, but this was cancelled at the last minute and substituted with a statement.

Cabinet welcomed news that unit 6 of the Medupi power plant has come into full commercial operation, but has warned that from Monday unit 2 of the Koeberg power station will be shut down for maintenance, which is expected to take three months.

Other key issues dealt with included South Africa's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the latest spate of police killings.

Cabinet has also approved Durban's bid for the 2022 games, ahead of the announcement of the host country next week.

There were well wishes for South Africa's athletes in Beijing and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi who's been in the hospital for the past few days.
