Shabangu grilled by EFF over NDP target claims
Minister Susan Shabangu claims the NDP target of at least 5% economic growth remains within reach.
But she came under fire from the Economic Freedom Fighter's (EFF) MPs in the National Assembly who wanted to know whether the African National Congress (ANC) was willing to admit the NDP is a failure because its objectives aren't being achieved.
Figures released this week show the economy shrank by 1,3 percent in the second quarter of this year.
Responding to questions in the National Assembly yesterday, Shabangu said the five percent growth target is achievable.
"And we are mindful that there are current challenges economically, but also within that we're going to weather the storm."
But EFF MP Sam Matiase wasn't satisfied with her answer.
"This problem of members of the executive failing to give quality answers, it's a problem because it undermines the effort that we put in the questions that we put."
His chief whip Floyd Shivambu then jumped in.
"It's pure illiteracy to consider that we will achieve five percent growth. Where do you get that?"
Shivambu dismissed her response as confused and mediocre.
