JOHANNESBURG - While Eskom's Medupi Power Station is only set to be complete in 2019, unit six has already helped the utility in avoiding load shedding.

There haven't been any rolling blackouts for almost three weeks.

On Sunday, a unit from Medupi was officially added to the grid providing 800 megawatts.

Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe said, "As long as we don't have a major breakdowns in our system, we will continue to keep the lights on. This unit is helping us because remember we did have a lot of maintenance backlog on our system."

He added any new additional capacity helps them to keep the lights on and that is exactly Medupi is doing.
