DA: SAHRC should investigate Umzinyathi District mayor
James Mthethwa said he intended clamping down on homosexuality because ‘gay people spread Aids’.
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) should investigate the recent homophobic statements made by the Umzinyathi District mayor.
James Mthethwa recently stated in KwaZulu-Natal that he intends clamping down on homosexuality and that gay people who spread Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) have no place in society.
The DA's Zakhele Mbhele said, "We completely reject and condemn those statements because of the dangerous and sometimes fatal effects it has in our society."
Maimane came under fire after a sermon he made at his church last year where he said God had given us a mission to be friends of sinners, and followed by mentioning a few of his friends such as Muslims and gays.
But Maimane took to Twitter to maintain that he supported gay and lesbians' rights because, he said, "we are all equal".
On the other hand, reports suggested Maimane's church was not in favour of marriage equality and even saw homosexuals as 'sinners'.
