JOHANNESBURG - Ten police officers have been arrested for the alleged torture and murder of a man in Ivory Park, east of Johannesburg.

In December last year Khuthazile Mbendu was killed, allegedly by the officers after they arrested him.

The 37-year-old was wanted in connection with theft. The ten officials are accused of torturing him while on route to the police station.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate's Grace Langa says the man succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

"He sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he died. It was ten police officers. We arrested them this morning and they will be appearing in court today."

This week, eight former police officers were convicted for the murder of taxi driver Mido Macia.

He was found dead in a holding cell at the Daveyton Police Station on the East Rand after being dragged behind a police van in February 2013.
