JOHANNESBURG - Virginia State Police have confirmed that Vester Flanagan, who used the name 'Bryce Williams' on air, has died.

He succumbed to a gunshot wound after shooting himself in a confrontation with police.

The suspect (41) in the on-air shooting of two Virginia television journalists was pronounced dead at a hospital on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post.

Police say they tracked a rented vehicle Flanagan was travelling in on the Interstate 66 Highway, when he turned a gun on himself.

He died at approximately 1:30pm.

A Franklin County Sheriff said they could not confirm the motive but said they would continue with investigations.

Earlier today a video purported to have been recorded by the shooter himself was uploaded to social networks including Facebook and Twitter.

There has been no independent verification of its authenticity, but it appears to show the attack from the gunman's perspective.

In the video the gun is briefly visible in the frame, before it is lowered and the shooter's camera angle is adjusted.

At this stage it is clear that Ward is recording generic footage of the mall.

It appears the shooter then waits for Ward to pan his camera back to focus on reporter Alison Parker before opening fire.

Several shots and screams can be heard in the footage.

The screen then goes black, with several more shots audible after a brief pause.

WHITE HOUSE REACTS TO VIRGINIA SHOOTING

The White House said the deadly shooting was exemplary of escalating gun violence in the United States.

The White house added it was another example of gun violence "that is becoming all too common in America".

Parker (24) and photographer Ward (27) were shot dead during a live interview in what authorities are calling a "double execution".

White House secretary, Josh Earnest, says while there is no legislation that will end the problem of gun violence, there are a few viable solutions.

"There are some common sense things that only congress can do, that we know will have a tangible impact in reducing gun violence in this country, and congress can take those steps in a way that would not infringe on the constitutional rights of law abiding Americans."

Colleagues at the station remembered the victims as "devoted journalists".

Earlier today, General Manager at television station WDBJ, Jeff Marks, expressed his anger over the attack saying he wasn't sure if Flanagan should live.
