JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has confirmed a police officer who was shot and wounded in Hillbrow is now out of danger and is recovering well in hospital.

The MEC visited Constable Gladstone Chauke today at the Milpark Hospital.

His colleague, Warrant Officer Bophelo Mosekwana was killed during the shooting.

Nkosi-Malobane says although Chauke still has to undergo another procedure, doctors have cleared him of any danger.

"We found him in high spirits, he's better and completely out of danger."

Chauke and his colleague were patrolling the Hillbrow area on Saturday morning when a woman approached and told them two men had tried to rob her.

When the officers confronted the pair, one of them disarmed Mosekwana and shot him multiple times, killing him.

Constable Chauke was also hit but survived.

Police arrested one of the suspects this morning while the other was gunned down in Jeppestown.

Mosekwana's firearm was found next to the suspect's body.

Over 56 officers have been killed nationally since the beginning of the year.
