Maqubela in court to appeal conviction & sentence
Maqubela’s lawyers will try to convince the judge that she should be allowed to approach the Supreme Court.
Maqubela's lawyers will try to convince Judge John Murphy that she should be allowed to take her case to the Supreme Court of Appeal because they believe another court could come to a different conclusion.
In March, she was sentenced to an effective 18 years behind bars for killing her husband, acting Judge Patrick Maqubela.
She was also found guilty of forging his will and fraudulently presenting the document to the Johannesburg office of the Master of the High Court.
Her husband was found dead in his Bantry Bay apartment in 2009.
When sentencing Maqubela, Judge John Murphy weighed up a string of aggravating and mitigating factors.
He said she had killed her husband during an "explosive crisis" in their relationship and had been humiliated by his extra marital affairs.
But the Judge also said she was prone to deception, fraudulent conduct and an almost delusional tendency to lie.
