CAPE TOWN - South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operations Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng on Tuesday called for journalists to be regulated.

He made the call during a meeting of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications in Cape Town.

The COO was responding to a question from the Democratic Alliance's Gavin Davis.

"We should not be afraid for media to be regulated. Even Parliament is regulated and the judges are regulated," he said.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi was reluctant to comment on the matter.

"This [is a] debate I've not been following thus far."

Muthambi did however say the media has a responsibility to promote patriotism and nation building.

She adds the media should not serve party politics.
