The 24-year-old is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at a pub in Greenside, north of Johannesburg, earlier this month.
He was arrested over the weekend after the teenager opened the case against him.
The police's Mashadi Selepe says he'll stay in custody until his case resumes on Friday.
"Yes it can be confirm that he appeared briefly in court and the case was remanded to Friday for a formal bail application."
In June, another one of Mandela's grandsons, Mandla, received a suspended sentence in the Mthatha Magistrates Court.
The defence had told the court Mandla was the family breadwinner and a first time offender, but the prosecution wanted the African National Congress Member of Parliament to be sent to prison.
Mandla had been convicted of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, an offence that could result in a jail term.
He was, however, last week granted leave to appeal his assault conviction.
