Zuma announces plan to circumvent mining sector job losses

JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma has announced that an economic and development fast-tracking initiative will be implemented in the mining sector, which is facing job losses in part due to a drop in commodity prices.

Zuma said operation Phakisa, which has already been implemented in the ocean economy, will be rolled out to the mining sector in October.

The president said mining was facing serious challenges and the operation will build partnerships between government and the mining sector, "So as to unlock investments and optimise the sector's positive developmental impact on the economy and society".

Zuma said talks to launch operation Phakisa have already started, adding that the goal was to unlock investment.

He has also announced a plan to the boost the mining industry amid fractious wage negotiations and looming retrenchments.

"More than 30 consultations have been held with business associations, individual mining companies, trade unions, civil society organisations and various government departments."

Zuma says the goal is to unlock investment.

"Increasing exploration activities, including enabling initiatives by the state such as more detailed geo-scientific information."
