NUM: A strike in the gold sector is now unavoidable

JOHANNESBURG - Both the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said wage talks in the gold sector have collapsed.

The unions have declared a dispute and talks will have to be mediated by government.

They claim employers reverted to their initial wage offer.

NUM says a strike in the gold sector is now "unavoidable".

The unions' Livhuwani Mammburu said talks are back at square one and that they will take the dispute to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

"The wage negotiations have completely collapsed, and we have declared a dispute with the chamber and we are going to file a dispute at the CCMA for the negotiations to happen under the auspices of the CCMA."

Amcu is demanding an entry level wage of R12,500; while NUM wants a minimum salary of between R9,500 and R10,500.

The employers, meanwhile, are offering a hike of between R450 and R750.

On the other hand, gold companies say any mention of a strike in the sector is premature as the matter must still be discussed at mediation level.

The employers say they have reverted to the initial offer of a 7,8 to 13 percent increase after a deadlock with the unions.

Harmony Gold spokesperson Charmaine Russel says the employers are confident a compromise will be found through mediation

"I think it's a little premature to be talking about that. In fact very often in wage negotiations, when we get to mediation, that's when the real engagement starts."
