IFP MPs questions Women’s Day festivity budget
An IFP MP says money spent on Women’s Day festivities would be better spent on those directly affected.
CAPE TOWN - Members of Parliament (MPs) have been told that the money allocated to Women's Day festivities would be better spent helping organisations directly concerned with issues affecting women.
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) MP Liezl van der Merwe made the point during a debate on Women's Day in Parliament on Tuesday.
She said there's not enough funding for programmes that help women.
"The annual budget of the Department of Women in the Presidency is barely half of what we have spent on Nkandla. The commission of gender equality is underfunded and underfunding undermines all the progress we've made so far."
Van der Merwe said, "Money spent on large delegations to international conferences would be better spent on practical programmes like distributing sanitary towels to school girls who cannot afford it."
