JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on Tuesday said it will not tolerate financial mismanagement in schools and will investigate all allegations of corruption in the province.

On Tuesday, GDE officials opened up a criminal case against Glenvista High School officials accused of squandering millions of rands.

The department revealed what it called shocking findings from a forensic investigation conducted by auditing firm KPMG.

LISTEN: Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was approached by whistleblowers to launch a probe into allegations of extreme financial mismanagement at Glenvista High School.

It said it will investigate any School Governing Body (SGB) that steals from schools or mismanages funds.

Spokesperson Pumla Sekhonyane said parents with evidence must come forward.

She said the department is training new SGBs to detect corrupt activity.

While Sekhonyane said the final figure is still being quantified, officials have estimated roughly R8 million was misappropriated.

WATCH:The Gauteng Education Department handed over affidavits and statements implicating the school's former principal and governing body members for squandering funds for personal use.
